Why Did theTurtle Cross the Road?...

...To get to the river on the other side!

Yesterday afternoon I picked my granddaughter up at her soccer practice, and as we were almost to her home we saw this big guy just starting to cross the road from a wetland area toward the river side of the highway.

In the picture above he looks like he's smiling,... be we all know that jovial isn't an attitude that snapping turtles exhibit! In the picture below you can see his mouth is open. He... or she,... isn't happy with us taking pictures. The shell on this turtle easily measured 12 inches front to back.

A happy note to end on,... the turtle made it across the road to the river.

Fantastic photos... really glad your "critter" made it across the road. Bet Emmy was glad to see it... she loves her "nature".

I'm always sort of amazed that they *know* the river is on the other side of the road. Great pics! Scary too. I bet that beak could do some damage.

thanks! yes, it did get to the other side, and we didn't get close enough to find out about the "snap" of those jaws! Seemed like a good idea to keep several feet between us, right?

A good news story! Although I see it nearly every day here, I always hate to see wildlife hit on the roads: it makes me yearn for the old days of horse travel.
