Snow!...

Yesterday the snowstorm that hit the North Country of New York stretched all the way across the country from Texas to Maine causing a lot of damage where it was nasty freezing rain and ice. I received the phone call just after 6 a.m. that there would be no school, a decision made in anticipation of the forecast of dangerous conditions to come. At 8:30 a.m. it was just a "dusting" of dry powder snow on the deck.

I did some housework, then at noon settled down to watch a movie, "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" with a powerful cast, August Schellenberg (Sitting Bull), Gordon Tootoosis (Red Cloud), and Adam Beach (Dr. Charles Eastman). It was done with great respect and historic accuracy. I am glad I bought the dvd as I need to watch it again to catch things I may have missed.
By 3 p.m. we had 5.5 inches of snow. Still dry, still powder...
By 9 p.m. it was still snowing light powder, with no indication of freezing rain. This far north we were certainly lucky. 8 inches of fresh powder, the skier's delight!

This morning I measured -- only one more inch fell overnight. So instead of the 12-16 inches forecast we only totalled 9 inches. My son has plowed my driveway, now I need to shovel off the deck ... again!

At my house about 6 inches fell and mostly after 1pm. I took a snow day to be home with the kids...although it may actually go in the books as a vacation day :(
didn't even get any snowshoeing in.

Fresh clean snow is so pretty to look at! Hope you're staying snug!

You are LUCKY! Here it changed to freezing rain, sleet and ice. Overnight all the slush froze. My driveway is a sheet of ice top to bottom. Two of my neighbors slid off their driveways trying to get out this morning. I couldn't even get back up mine, left the truck at the bottom! Thank goodness the sun is out, maybe later I can try to get up the driveway. :-P

You had a good snow day! I've been reading the accounts of the cold weather across the nation and my heart goes out to those who have to be without power for so long. I'm glad you're not involved in that!

Pretty neat to watch it accumulate like that - thanks for the pics. We got a little bit overnight down here, maybe an inch. It quickly turned to slush and rain once morning came.

You were lucky! It was aweful here all day yesterday. Probably between 10 amd 12 inches with freezing rain in the middle. I'm so ready for spring! Jean

Bleeeeccchh! I'm not liking snow. Icky.
We have the frigid temperatures which is bad enough but I must say that I would rather have to deal with icy cold temperatures than all that snow!! I can walk in arctic air much better than 4 feet of snow...
Hang in there, my friend. Spring is around the corner... isn't it?
((Hugs))

Gee Cedar.... I cannot imagine that much snow.. I've only seen big snows a few times, but I guess this wasn't a 'big' snow to you...

Glad you had a good movie to watch. Hope you had some popcorn also!!!

Stay warm.
Hugs,
Betsy

I'm envious of your snow in one way, but in another way I'm ready for SPRING! We have little bits of snow floating around in the air today but none on the ground, and while you were getting dumped on with snow, we were getting rain, rain and more rain! Enjoy your winter wonderland!

I read the book when it first came out many years ago. It so affected me that I haven't watched the movie. Perhaps I should just grab some tissues and watch it.

Please keep that snow on the east coast....we have had our share here in Spokane this winter---almost 100 inches in December. Just found your blog and I am sure I will enjoy reading it. You can find me at elevenfootrv.blogspot.com/

Great movie. We have visited Wounded Knee and the Redbud reservation on our way to Montana.
