AuSable Chasm...

Near Keeseville, NY, is AuSable Chasm. A gorge worn down through the sedimentary sandstone rock. The AuSable River flows through the chasm on its way to Lake Champlain. I believe that AuSable translated is "of sand". If you follow that link to the AuSable River page you will see the arch bridge over the AuSable Chasm. As the trails weren't open on Easter Sunday when we were out for a picnic I couldn't walk to the overlook to take a picture back toward the bridge. Thank you, Wikipedia!

As I have a fear of heights so to take the tour through the gorge, along walkways won't be happening! But from overlooks near the highway I was able to get these photos for you. What do you think of those waterfalls, Betsy from Tennesee?
If you are visiting the Adirondack area, and if geology fascinates you give AuSable Chasm a look!

Spring on the River...

With so many wildflowers in bloom lately I have spent my time looking down at the ground. A few days ago as I was driving home from work I realized that the leaves were nearly full grown. In this shot of the Boquet River you can see that several trees are in full-leaf, while some are not quite there yet.

It seems like we are looking forward to warm weather in May, then all of a sudden it is the 4th of July, then it's August and school is almost ready to start for another year. With the speed of life in mind I'm enjoying so much green around me this year. I'm savoring every leaf and flower! Here is some springtime green for you to enjoy!

Life Waiting,...

This morning on my way home from having breakfast with a friend, I drove by this river. I was thinking of all the life that is natural to a river and wetland area. For now it is silenced by winter's snow and ice. But in a few weeks the leaves will bud, the ferns will be loosening their curls, the "peepers" will be singing during the springtime evenings.

Ducks will once again be swimming along with a family of babies trailing behind ...

Perhaps even some people will enjoy the peaceful river as they float along in kayaks,...

It is a good time of year to think positively about the coming warmer seasons!

Snow on the Bog,...

When visiting in Tupper Lake on Saturday we made a side trip to the Bog River Falls. In any season it's one of Mother Nature's most beautiful places. After a fresh snow it seemed especially magical!
Looking up-river from the bridge...

Turning to look the other direction from the bridge over the Bog River,... we see camps on Tupper Lake.

If you wish to go, travel south from the village of Tupper Lake via Rt 30, then a short way after a right turn onto Rt. 421. You won't be disappointed!

Along the River,...

It seems like this time of year is so dreary,.. the bright colors of fall are gone, and all that is left are drab browns and greys. These leaves are still clinging to bushes along the river near my house. They are actually a copper color. A welcome break in the dull colors.

The Bouquet River (pronounced "Bo-qwet.") with the early morning fog,...

Not a ripple to mar the surface!

Crystal Brook....

The word "view" to me means whatever you are looking at. Yesterday my "Adirondack View" was to the east as I drove through Vermont. On my way to a great old time fair in central Vermont I passed this brook in Ripton. There was no sign to tell the brook's name. Last night I searched online maps and believe it to be Crystal Brook. If anyone knows differently, please correct me.
The leaves are starting to turn shades of orange and red. The foliage is far from peak colors yet but the hint of what is to come had its own beauty.

Looking downstream there are huge boulders and river bottom ledges that are layered and nearly verticle.
There must have been a geological upheaval at one time to leave this tell-tale mark.

Oh, to fall asleep every night with the sound of this brook outside my window!

Why Did theTurtle Cross the Road?...

...To get to the river on the other side!

Yesterday afternoon I picked my granddaughter up at her soccer practice, and as we were almost to her home we saw this big guy just starting to cross the road from a wetland area toward the river side of the highway.

In the picture above he looks like he's smiling,... be we all know that jovial isn't an attitude that snapping turtles exhibit! In the picture below you can see his mouth is open. He... or she,... isn't happy with us taking pictures. The shell on this turtle easily measured 12 inches front to back.

A happy note to end on,... the turtle made it across the road to the river.

Along the Hudson,...

Wikipedia says: "The Hudson River, called Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk in Mohican, ...is a 315-mile river, ... It is named for Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Dutch East India Company, who explored it in 1609"

Just north of the village of North Creek, along route 28, the Hudson's flow is a long way from busy New York City and eventually the Atlantic Ocean. Here in the Adirondacks, the high water of springtime is over, it is peaceful at this time of year.

Downriver,...

Upriver,...
There are two parking areas between North Creek and North River villages, one of which has excellent signs explaining the river's natural communities that thrive here.

At the second parking area,... downriver,...

The late afternoon sun glimmers on the water as I looked upriver,...

It's no wonder that several cars were parked here and people were out sitting along the river enjoying one of the last really warm afternoons of summer.
